2012 IN CHRISTIAN KIDDIE MUSIC
Hillsong Kids Jr.
Crazy Noise!
(Hillsong/Sparrow)
In the "kids' music my actual kids care nothing about" department (see also: The Fresh Beat Band), here's the kids' ministry of Australian megachurch Hillsong -- or apparently, the child of said kids' ministry. (On a related note, it's not too soon to start planning for VBS.) The title song sounds uncomfortably close to the Wiggles, but it does celebrate noise as a legitimate praise tactic, an idea you also find in plenty of free jazz and a charge I've leveled at both Wadada Leo Smith and Weasel Walter, the latter of whom might object. Much of this album sounds like the lite electro of Owl City -- no, don't run away! -- with a strange undercurrent of sadness running through it. Aside from the aforementioned Wigglers, though, it's never as cutesy as Owl City and is frequently more pleasant, maybe because it's more relaxed.
"Be Strong" is a litany of faith heroes that does its thing without fuss and often without rhymes, until it swells to a big synth-brassy chorus. Unexpectedly charming.
Way better than P.O.D.'s Murdered Love.
