Given the choice between traditional gospel and the modern, R&B-flavored variety, I’ll choose the modern stuff nearly every time. And Damita does the future really well, lacing her odes to resilience and faith with stuttering electro-snare fillips and synths that signal a freestyle revival. But the real revival comes four songs in, on the more traditional throwback “Amazing God”, where Damita turns hurricane -- whipping the song's opulent cheer into such an unpredictable force that I’m never sure whether to laugh, cry, or pull off the road for safety.
Way better than Marvin Sapp's I Win.
